About Me - Dr Jo Macgregor

About Me - Dr Joanne (Jo) Macgregor

I have worked for the past 20 years in semi rural general practice.
I have loved getting to know my patients and being known by them.

I am passionate about the value of General Practice in improving health populations.
I wanted to be a doctor from when I was a small child and feel both the enormous privilege and the burden of being a GP.

I want to provide a service to doctors that would have been helpful for me at different stages of my professional life.. as a young GP navigating relationships, boundaries and expectations ( both of myself and the patient’s expectations of me ).
With more experience I questioned the model of medicine that I had been taught and wondered if that was helpful for me and my patients. .. what did it mean to be unwell for that patient, what was the significance of their illness and how did it fit into their story? Was the medical model helpful or unhelpful in making sense of their experience?

As I listened to patients stories I was conscious that I had a story of my own.
Practicing medicine is the art of listening to another’s story whilst trying to honour your own .. “ do have enough time for this patients issues, I am already running late “, “my child is sick and my partner needs me and there are 20 more people to see today”, “My inbox is overloaded and task list is huge”, “why is the other doctor making me feel inadequate “

As I have learned about coaching and mentoring I can see its value in helping doctors navigate their professional life and the boundaries between their professional and personal life.
I look forward to making this journey with you.
